Discover Vietnam: The Ok Om Bok Festival in the Mekong Delta, Vietnam

Rooted in the religious belief that the Moon is the God that protects crops, the Ok Om Bok festival is celebrated by Khmer people in Ca Mau, Can Tho, Soc Trang, Bac Lieu, Kien Giang, Hau Giang, Tra Vinh, Vinh Long, and many other southern provinces.

The festival is held during the full moon from 14th to 15th October Cadac Luna Calendar (In 2014, The festival from 02/11/2014 to 07/11/2014). Participants wish to express their gratitude to the Gods while praying for their supporting to supply farmers with good weather and a bountiful harvest in the coming year.

The most popular activity is the Ngo Boat race, called “tukngo” in Khmer, which involves paddling in a wooden canoe, carved from a fine wood into long, diamond shape. The canoe manages to look both gaudy and fantastic !
